  • Introduction

We briefly introduce the field of positive psychology and emotional intelligence as a pivotal psychological tool.

  • Session 1 - The Sailboat Metaphor

The sailboat metaphor compares human functioning to a sailboat and its journey and offers a multi-faceted yet easy-to-understand perspective of self.

  • Session 2 - Emotions and Emotional Intelligence

This session provides a scientific definition and description of emotions and EI. We also introduce the sailboat metaphor as a tool to understand the various processes underlying EI.

  • Session 3 - Mastering Attention - The Key to Emotional Awareness

This session focuses on developing emotional awareness by 1) paying attention to emotions, i.e., increasing awareness, and 2) labeling them, i.e., recognizing them for what they are.

  • Session 4 - The Power of Thoughts - Beliefs About Emotions

In Session 4, you provide a second lever for developing emotional intelligence involving your client’s thoughts and beliefs about emotions.

  • Session 5 - Motivation - Emotions Are Data

In Session 5, you provide a third lever for developing emotional intelligence, which involves viewing emotions as data.

  • Session 6 - Effective Action - Emotion Regulation

In Session 6, the focus shifts to emotion regulation. You draw on the imagery of a captain who manages the direction of their sailboat so that the compass’s feedback remains in line with the intended destinations.

  • Session 7 - Emotional Expression

In this session, the focus shifts to emotional expression.

  • Session 8 - The Emotional Intelligence Plan

In this final session, you invite your client to reflect on the ideal captain they described in the first session.
